Watson is very aware of Holmes addiction to cocain. Holmes is equally aware of Watson's addiction to bordellos and gambling. Both are aware of Mrs Hudson propensity to eavesdrop and snoop, and both know Mrs Hudson's secret about her former husband, his demise and the hold each has over the other. Holmes is able to disguise himself and imitate anyone, ..........even a female bordello worker ....... "Lola".....a favorite of Watsons....yet Watson is unable to locate his "Lola" unless he has first visited the dens..opium dens....and Holmes has never met "Lola" face to face ... ....Mrs Hudsons former employment in Swandom lane........an entire department of Scotland yard ......chaperoned by friendly catholic priests..to visit and experience.....the gray gloomy cold foggy world of a yesteryear where gritty life meant something more than the moment and the pain of acute hunger is numbed by tobacco and alcohol. Clarity and justice were never part and parcel of Edwardian England............think about the life we have now, and the difference in silence and the price of solitude........the value of the spoken word...taken carefully...the written word...a full value more.......and as always.....humourous stories among the pub crowd prove time and agian to be as viable as coin of the realm. Holmes understood all this....and he was powerless.
