Dr Watson..... Sherlocks facilitator
Watson is very aware of Holmes addiction to cocain. Holmes is equally aware of Watson's addiction to bordellos and gambling. Both are aware of Mrs Hudson propensity to eavesdrop and snoop, and both know Mrs Hudson's secret about her former husband, his demise and the hold each has over the other. Holmes is able to disguise himself and imitate anyone, ..........even a female bordello worker ....... "Lola".....a favorite of Watsons....yet Watson is unable to locate his "Lola" unless he has first visited the dens..opium dens....and Holmes has never met "Lola" face to face ... ....Mrs Hudsons former employment in Swandom lane........an entire department of Scotland yard ......chaperoned by friendly catholic priests..to visit and experience.....the gray gloomy cold foggy world of a yesteryear where gritty life meant something more than the moment and the pain of acute hunger is numbed by tobacco and alcohol. Clarity and justice were never part and parcel of Edwardian England............think about the life we have now, and the difference in silence and the price of solitude........the value of the spoken word...taken carefully...the written word...a full value more.......and as always.....humourous stories among the pub crowd prove time and agian to be as viable as coin of the realm. Holmes understood all this....and he was powerless.
Sherlock Holmes et al futility of immortality
Numerous articles on Sherlock Holmes and his entourage of characters have often received a superficial glance and perfunctory scrutiny of a moment of distraction. Some however, among the "edgy" intellect and radical thought slicers.....have attained an elevation of clarity and revelation. To extract meaning and a philosophy of science by collecting observations and repeatable practices......imbue a learner with appreciation for expansion of their data storage ability as a process of intellectual rationalization. Not as clear as I intended to impart...but useful to those who aspire to reconcile the injustice of intellectual discrimination. People...good people, are put down because they are not as smart as those in power. This I hope to address, and ultimately change....even if that change requires a physical intervention.
Firstly, we all are aware of copycat criminals, and the would be wanna be super heroes..consider that these people are......only imitating the inspiration of loftier goals which are considered "legitimate" in our society at the present time.
To attempt to add a useful bent on this blog, I will reference to....and comment on.......my personal life experiences....from Viet Nam...to the Federal Government...to working on a small island in the South Pacific...to working at a wafer fab...then a research center....then back to another fab...then on to pharmaeceuticals mfg........actully a very technical oriented career checkered by bouts of alcohol, unemployment, flashbacks and marital and indentity strife yet with a connecting thread of books and reading and thinking. And only now....after half a century of being a rebel, a hippie, a veteran, a small business owner, a writer, and artist, a big business slave, and a lackey for the people who wish to stay in power by lies to the real people of the world. I now will say what you always suspected about the ruling class..........the dirty truth in money and power.
Let me clarify....people blessed with an above average intellect are often more stressed as they find it harder to accept anything less than justice.
Comments by one .... james27word ...... posted on the SHSI on yahoo groups (which is actually myself) eloquently exact an observance due the church minded justice and morality tilted crowd with pinpoint exactitude .....examinations of Sherlock Holmes stories based in historical research....stories which ACD claimed as his fiction but actually had roots in real events of that era. Even as these stories are over one hundred years old, they are as appropriate today as before, what is most frightening....is that the injustice ACD noted one hundred years ago........is still here today..........young people only imitate other young people...they are rebels in unison.......like "rock and roll"...nothing more than institutionalized adolescense. Peter Pan...nevers grows up...never faces justice.....never pulls his own weight.
If we are to cause real change, we need to see real justice, starting within our own minds. Let us give pause and courtesy to those who have gone before us and saw the same thing as I do now.......will we be able to end the circle and go on a straight path for progress..........I wonder
Sherlock was alone, yet not by himself alone...the others around him...supported and validated his social indifference........encouraging his delusion of self righteous one man vigilante........judge jury and executioner in one drug addicted brain.....
Apocryphal tales will never arise to ACD originals.....but technology will allow an edge to equalize the creators of new tales with the Grand Canon.
221B is alive and well in 1895, and that will live as long as one person on this planet reads from the Canon.
